Erfurt, the flourishing capital city of Thuringia
place of churches, horticulture and beautiful medieval architecture
Let me accompany you while discovering this inimitably city, “Thuringia’s Rome”!
Erfurt’s history became already tangible with the foundation of a diocese in 742. No wonder that the silhouette of many churches dominate Erfurt today. Parts of the magnificent cathedral, and probably the church next to it, date back to this time. Today they are the landmarks of Erfurt beside the Merchants’ Bridge, where on both sides you will find small houses with little shops selling handcrafted items. The bridge was part of Via Regia, a long-established trade route in medieval times.
No less a person than Martin Luther, famous reformer of Christianity, studied in Erfurt and joined the Augustinians there. His monastery and university will be part of our tour, together with some beautifully restored medieval buildings and the oldest Synagogue of a Jewish Community in the middle of Europe.
Today Erfurt is well known for its horticulture and played host to the National Garden Show 2021.
